Let me first say, for the purpose of full disclosure, that although Riccardo Desini and I aren't best friends or anything, we do occasionally correspond with one another via deviant art and tumblr and we have for the better part of a year. So I am not totally unbiased. Having said that, I'd like to recommend that you folks check out Manifest #1 by Riccardo Desini. It's available now at DriveThru Comics.

You know I love me some Marvel Comics and to a lesser degree, DC Comics, but I also like to break out of that comfort zone and try new characters and new worlds.Manifest #1 introduces us to the voluptuous Tessa Theus, known as the Thunder Girl, and her friend and mysterious ally, Wayfarer. When we first meet Tessa, she is living a normal, unremarkable sort of existence. But the world that she thinks she knows is soon revealed to be something else altogether, and her true identity as the Thunder Girl is revealed. This does not please Saturn, ruler of the strange, futuristic world of Manifest and, apparently, the big, powerful bad guy of the series (or is he?)

Manifest is a world immersed in intrigue and power struggles between characters with conflicting motives. I believe you'll be drawn in as much by the depth of the plot as you will the quality of the art, which is professionally done and well suited to the story. The art is in black and white but fear not. Like Moebius, like Alex Toth, like Jordi Bernet and the Hernandez Brothers before him, Desini knows how to tell a story in black and white and have you not even miss the color.

As with all good serialized fiction, Manifest #1 leaves us with many questions. Who is on who’s side? Who can be trusted? Is the situation really as it seems? I believe the author has some twists in store and by the looks of his preview art (found on his DA page) many more fascinating characters to introduce. I can't wait for Manifest #2.

If you’d like to know more about Riccardo Desini’s art, please check out his Deviant Art page and his Tumblr page.
