Dr. Blink: Superhero Shrink #0
by Andrew P. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/17/2020 17:18:03

Absolutely hysterical. And the professional family counselor I showed it to cracked up.

I wish there were more stories in this series.

Wild Life: The Cardinal Collection
by Daniel L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/24/2015 19:16:31

I had often wondered about the humble origins of Carson the Muskrat. He starts here as a college student who is undergoing the process of figuring out his life (well before he meets the Dork Tower crowd). Also, he's really funny to read about.

While I want to talk about Wild Life as a proto-Dork Tower that comparison is hardly fair. Yes, the art style has evolved. And yes, I can see the beginnings of some common themes and joke material. However, calling Wild Life a "proto-Dork Tower" makes it sound like it's not a full product or idea on it's own. The reality is that Wild Life is a fully formed idea that is well executed. While there are some areas that Dork Tower may have carried on and expanded, Wild Life deserves to be read as more than just a historical curiosity.

The physical copy was well made, though the dimensions of the book are obviously not the ones of the original print run. Based on the cover art, I suspect the original printing was shaped like the old Far Side lengthy collections. Quirks of the reprint aside, it's a high quality printed book and well worth what I paid for it. I look forward to buying more of Kovalic's collections here.

The only real drawback to the book is that some of the political references haven't aged well. You need to be well versed in 180's politics to fully get all the jokes. I was alive in the 80's and can barely remember the importance of a few of the punchlines. I hope anyone younger than me majored in history or poli sci (or is prepared to wiki several jokes).

Still, the bulk of the comics stand well on their own. Most speak to universal experiences of college kids. I remember myself and my friends at that age and there is a bit of us reflected in the main cast. I suspect that most people will be able to read it and say the same.

Embrace the Squee

I'm in my 40s and have had more fun coloring pages from this collection than I thought possible. There are both simple and complex pages, good for all coloring abilities. There are plenty of images for girls and boys. There are also several Kobolds from 'Kobolds Ate My Baby' as well. If you play Munchkin or Apples to Apples, you are already familiar with John Kovalic's work. Plus, it's cheap and supports charity. What are you waiting for?

I love John Kovalic’s work on Dork Tower, but I just didn’t enjoy Dr. Blink very much. Matter of taste, I guess.

Dork Tower #7: Chillin'

This is classic Kovalic, down to the Charles Schulz tribute in the first story. Of course, gamer madness prevails in the end as is fitting. Being one of the earlier editions of Dork Tower, the artwork is actually more likeable as you can tell John was not nearly fully settled into his characters.

The scans of the original pages are flawless and as this was entirely black and white, you can easily get the 'comic book' feel just reading it on screen. Downloading and reading this took me back to ten years ago when it was published.

Simply put, John Kovalic makes me laugh. I first read Dork Tower in Shadis Magazine, many years ago, and I have been an avid reader of Kovalic's work ever since. I met him one year at Origins, and was pleased with how nice and pleasant he was. Kovalic's comics are ink drawings, so they show up beautifully on my Kindle DX. Since this is older, it is interesting to see how his style has improved over the last few years. I still get a chuckle out this--I recommend, for John Kovalic is a funny man.

I heard of Dork Tower but never read it until I downloaded this book. I enjoyed the style of the comic and, being a gamer, I've heard references to a number of these panels before. I had no idea they originated with Dork Tower but, as it turns out, I'd been laughing at it long before I read it.
