The Forgotten Queen Trade
by Eddy W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/26/2023 02:15:37

A wonderful addition to the immortal cast of the Valiant universe. It's great to see a fresh take on the "immortal warrior" idea. Fans of Gail Simone's run on Red Sonja will find a lot to love in this.

Generation Zero Volume 1: We Are The Future
by Eddy W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/10/2022 15:48:25

Another interesting team of Valiant's not-mutants called psiots. It's got a strong vibe of Umbrella Academy or Doom Patrol: a collection of kids with strange powers are on the run, but their powers and the things they face are distinctly surreal and bizarre. In issue #3, for example, an elaborate Archie Comics homage ends up being a significant plot point. Definitely worth a read if you like high school drama and weird storytelling.

Doctor Tomorrow (2020) Volume 1
by Eddy W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/06/2022 11:23:37

A neat little multiverse storyline, and a surprise sequel to the Ivar, Timewalker series. Unfortunately, the whole thing feels a bit rushed -- it would have benefitted from a few more issues to help readers care about the core characters, and lay the groundwork for some of the twists so they don't come out of nowhere. Still, if you dig stuff like the Loki TV show or Doctor Who, it's worth a read.

Britannia Volume 3: Lost Eagles of Rome
by Eddy W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/05/2022 16:31:58

The latest (and unfortunately last) volume of Britannia. This one takes place in Egypt primarily, but the intersection of mystical thinking, logical detection, and political intrigue isn't lost.

Another great volume of Britannia. This one takes place inside Rome, allowing the Detectioner to mingle with the class and gender politics of the time. If you liked the first volume, this second one is just as good.

Britannia Volume 1
by Eddy W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/29/2022 12:24:15

Although put out by Valiant, this isn't a superhero comic. It's more of a historical horror mystery, featuring Antonius Axia, the world's first detective. The story moves effortlessly between Sherlock Holmes induction tricks and outright fantasy, never quite clarifying whether the whole thing is genuinely magical or actually based in reality. It's self-contained, so it makes for a nice, tight read.

Rai Volume 1: Welcome to New Japan
by Rafo L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/10/2020 23:00:29

This is excellent sci-fi/cyberpunk comics with a tall glass of feudal japan in the sky mixed father issues from afar. I highly recommend reading this if you are fan of any of those buzzwords I just dropped or if you were a fan of the previous versions of Rai. He's here and has more to deal with than his previous incarnations. Thanks for the excellent work to everyone that did their thing in this book. From the art to the writing it's excellent.

Bloodshot Volume 1: Setting the World on Fire
by Scott V. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/20/2018 15:49:26

Bloodshot volume 1 is a decent opening to this series. The art like almost all of the Valiant books is top notch. The story in this first volume is decent and I am sure that future instalments will build on what is laid here. Overall, for the four issues contained herein I wold say it's worth a read. Not Valiant's best work but a solid start all the same.

Faith #1
by Crystal M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/21/2017 22:54:28

Title: Faith #1: Faith Begins Valiant Comics By Jody Houser, Francis Portela, and Marguerite Sauvage Posted on Crystal's Game Review Blog

Faith is a spinoff comic about a woman named Faith Herbert who had developed telekinetic abilities. She is able to fly and physically move objects. She joined a Superhero group called the Renegades to fight evil, but at the start of the comic, she had left the group in order to explore who she really is. She moved away from all of her friends, and started a new life on the West Coast as a pop culture blogger under the identity Summer Smith.

The comic starts a plotline right away, tieing the reader into wanting to figure out what is going on. Then we move onto Faith’s life and catch glimpses of her in her day to day activities. During the day, she continually has run ins with her past, including an ex that has a reality show. Her superhero identity, Zephyr, is rather well known, and is one of the driving stories for the blog that Faith writes for. Overall, Faith’s life is fairly similar to many of our own in those respects. Even her superhero identity isn’t over the top or zealous, but rather someone who understands what her job is, even if it is just puppies.

Overall, the starting comic for Faith does a good job in catching the reader up with some of the backstory for Faith. The reader will get to know the character Faith and how she interacts with the world. You get to see her daydreams, her heart breaks, and see how she misses her friends. She’s doing what she needs to move forward. Readers will also get to see her powers, and how she uses them, and how that kicks off her path down into the plot thread that was at the beginning of the comic.

Lastly, the amazing thing about this comic, and the one that drew me to it, was the fact that Faith is a plus sized superhero. She is portrayed as a normal woman facing normal things. She has dreams and fantasies, she dates, she has men she’s attracted to. And she doesn’t lament continually on her size. In fact, it is never even mentioned, even by the supporting characters. Even her costume is done well, and is practical for superhero fighting with a bit of flair. Her health and weight are not up for discussion in the comic, and as someone who is larger, that is important to me.

So, dear reader, I highly recommend Faith to everyone. Her character and the treatment of her identity is well done and her story is engaging and interesting. I look forward to reviewing her other stories in the future.

Divinity Trade
by Aric C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/27/2017 09:16:16

This is the type of book that makes you a fan of not just the creative team, but the entire universe within which it exists. Divinity is packed with lush art that is both clear and evocative, setting a very clear stage for one of the more thought-provoking stories in the medium. The story introduces concepts that are both alien and familiar and then executes on them in ways that you wouldn't expect. The reactions of the world to the events feel authentic and unforced, and it serves as a spectacular introduction the the current Valiant universe. If you follow no other books from Valiant, you won't be lost - although fully part of that world, it also stands alone in a way that complements the universe within which it resides.

A&A: The Adventures of Archer & Armstrong Volume 1: In The Bag
by Aric C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/27/2017 09:10:50

Easily one of the most fun books out there today, Archer & Armstrong has quickly become one of my favorites. This is, at its core, the ultimate odd couple pairing, and the ridiculousness of the situations in which the duo find themselves are a great backdrop to their love/hate relationship. If you enjoyed the original run, or were ever a fan of Quantum & Woody of the recent run of Power Man & Iron Fist, then this is the book for you.
