Disposable Heroes American Revolution Statix 1
by Peter S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/04/2010 13:34:49

This is a very nice set for an area that is rarely covered. I use the Bridtish redcoats for both Pirate adventures and for American Revolution wargames.

Warcosm PDF
by Ronald W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/25/2009 13:04:34

I have been searching for a good space combat game for some time. I picked up Warcosm hopeing that it would fill the void. It is a decent system but not quite what I was looking for. I gave it the 4 reating because it is exactly as advertised.

Iron Gauntlets Core PDF
by Paul S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/04/2009 13:25:00

The basic mechanics underlying Iron Gauntlets are sound and simple to use: it's a dice pool based on attributes and skills. However, there wasn't a lot that I liked apart from the elegance of the system.

The layout is cheap-looking, using too many fonts which don't go together and too many clipart illustrations in contrasting styles. It looks as if the designers are not native speakers of English from certain eccentric choices of spelling and vocabulary (I've never heard of a "commanding sword" and "prostrated skills" sounds painful) and translation could have been better. Character creation is easy but not well thought out from a balance point of view: certain choices of background are straight-out nerfs, for instance. Combat is again simple to master but little thought seems to have been given to it (for example, you can add armour pieces, but they have no effect whatsoever in the game) Magic comes in three varieties, one form obviously weaker than the other two. The Magic rules are very vague indeed and magic skills have rather confusing names. The experience system comes across as a straitjacket trying to squeeze you into running your own games in a certain way, to which many GMs (or "directors" as IG calls them) are simply going to say, "No thanks."

Overall, it starts out as a good idea but the presentation is somewhat cheap and nasty and there are many aspects in dire need of revision.

HardNova 2 RPG (PDF Collection)
by Kevin M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/21/2009 15:42:26

PIG has done a great job creating an easy to learn, multi-genre rules system (genreDiversion i) that actually works really well in play, and the Space Opera Sci-Fi setting of HardNova II is no exception. The rules are easy enough to learn that I was able to teach my 13 year old nephew the basics in less than 10 minutes.

Throw in an immersive background with some really cool alien races (in particular, the ruthless Ruthdii Komar really stand out as unique and interesting) pre-generated characters and spacecraft, and a handful of scenarios to get you started and you have everything you need to get up and running quickly and easily.

Also, the file size of the PDF is quite low for the amount of information that’s packed into it. So not only is it easy to use, it won’t take up very much space at all on your hard drive. Very well done!

Disposable Heroes Fantasy 4E Statix Core Classes
by paul r. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/09/2009 15:04:45

Statix ALWAYS come through with (dare I say) perfect artwork and variety AND the Disposable Heroes Fantasy 4E Statix Core Classes collection is no different. My gaming group has somewhat swelled with new players ever since the intro of D&D 4th Ed (and my switch from staunch Ad&d 2nd Ed loyalist to the fourth ed last year also attracted some of the "noob" players who picked up 4E books). Most of these new players have yet to invest in any minis so having these around to print up quick for em is great - Looking forward to a newer set with races from PHB2.

Active Exploits Diceless Roleplaying
by Jason C. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 08/20/2009 15:07:47

This excellent work is one of many "base system for free" PDFs that you'll find on the market, but you won't find one as thoroughly documented, well-laid-out, clearly written or downright useful as Active Exploits Diceless Roleplaying. The basic systems are quite simple, and the additional systems (for magic, psychic powers, and so on) are solid. As with all "generic" games, you are going to have to set up your own color and requirements in the setting, but the system is easily balanced. In addition, the PDF is very well-organized and a joy to use either on the computer or at the table. It is easy to find what you need relatively quickly. If you are considering putting together a game and want to try out a diceless system for it, give Active Exploits a look.

It also helps that the work is compatible with a lot of other excellent Precis Intermedia work, making this a good investment to improve the value of those games and supplements as well.

This game is everything it says it is, gets the job done solidly, and it's absolutely free. Since I can't think of a way to improve it significantly, I give it five stars.

Disposable StarMaps: Set 1
by Tim L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/31/2009 07:30:21

This is really neat. You get two different maps of the same image: a starscape. One is black and white, one is color. This is six pictures overall -- the color set is labeled with names on some of the stars that have planets which you can replace with your own names as well as possible political bountaries (or spheres of influence). You would have to drawn in any travel routes. You can't change the star positions, however.

PrecisRoller 2 (Mac Version)
by Mike H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/31/2009 02:54:16

What can I say? Looks great, works how it should and it's super-fast. I used to use online rollers but in the darks of Australia, I can't be guaranteed a web connection but this little gem guarantees dice.

There's extra incentives if you play Precis games (which I don't) but at this price, it's a steal. I'll get an iPhone one day and I'd love to see this programme on that platform too.

Two-Fisted Tales Revised: Pulp Villains
by Ronald W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/21/2009 15:01:01

Two fisted tales is two fisted pulp action from the very beginning of the book. The designer of this product really knows the subject matter well enough to draw yo in from the beginning. The game engine is similar to the one used in an old game called Feng Shui. If you are familiar with that game then catching on to TFT will be a breeze. Those unfamiliar with that game system will be able to catch on quickly because the TFT game is laid out well and written in a smooth style.

Bones: Customizable Dice RPG
by Hamilton R. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/17/2009 20:14:58

Bones is a great concept that is either under-developed as a story, or it is crushed under the weight of it's own concept. Now, the concept of making the dice themselves your character "sheet" is a novel approach, and that keeps the game from being a "1". The rules are tedious at times, but they are easily understood. That makes the game better than a 2 out of 5. However, that's where it ends. Maybe this is a good time to say, that if you really like the idea of dice characters and you are REALLY creative with your RPGs, then this game would deserve a 4 or a 5. Unfortunately, I like this game (dice: good, rules: basic yet tedious, art: OK) and that's why I am giving it the rating it gets here. I just don't have time to "upgrade" it with my own style of rules and mechanics. If you do, then for the price at under $5, it is a good buy. If you enjoy other games, then this game may not be a good choice for you. It needs tender love and care; if you have that to give, it is an OK game to get. Your call.

Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback. I've been meaning to update and simplify Bones since we took over publishing, but more pressing projects always keep me busy. Feel free to post your suggestions to the Precis Intermedia message boards or send us an email (see our website for contact info). Thanks again.

Disposable Heroes Superhero Statix 1
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 05/16/2009 08:40:30

For your money, you get a zipfile with a collection of PDF files. It's a bit confusing to start with, but once you start digging a bit all is made clear.

First there are 2 virtually identical files, the only difference being that one is in colour, the other black and white. Each starts with comprehensive assembly instructions for the 2 different types of free-standing miniature (tri-fold and A-frame), as well as information about the best printer settings and paper types to use. Then comes a list of all the superheroes included (Mystery Knight, Shadow Man, Fire Tosser, The Blaster, Eye Shock, Sonix, Electric Dude, Elastic Dude, Man of Rock, Power Woman, Power Man, Computer Powered, Mr. America, The Human Shield, Mechano Man, The Olympian, The Shrinker, The Speedster, The Archer, Magister, The Cloaked Detective, Alien Hero, Ms. Cyborg, Silver Steel, Rift Surfer, Beastformer, Mentiaxe, Hydro, Ice Dude, and The Avian). They are all fairly generic, so whether you need an established comic book hero or are using one of your own design you will probably find a close enough match to suffice for general combat moderation or skirmish purposes.

Then come the stand-ups themselves. The A-frame ones come with one colour (or line art in the black and white version) side, which indicates which way the character is facing. The other side is a silhouette. These can either be folded and glued using the integral blank tab to be freestanding, or you can purchase plastic bases and have them flat rather than A-shaped. The trifolds are much the same, with a silhouette face and two colour/line art ones from different angles, and they fold into a freestanding shape. There are also flat counters.

In separate files there are 'armies' - whole sheets of either standup or counter versions, 28 or so (depending on size) per page of the same character. This may not be so useful with superheroes, who tend to be individual, but it's a standard offering from this publisher in all their miniature sets so if you do happen to need a horde of superheroes, or perhaps costumed minions, they're here.

Overall, these are well-presented and clear figures to use as miniatures or counters when you get the battlemap out. Sizes are standard, so they can be mixed in with 25mm metal figures as needed or just scale appropriately to the floorplans obtainable for many settings. Nice, provided there are figure(s) to suit your requirements.
