It all began some years ago. I was reharsing an improvisation show set in a very peculiar place: it was the showroom of a lamp designer and it was an enchanted place: all dark, walls painted black and no windows. The bizarre lamps were scattered among a trove of vintage objects and, when lighted, made bright islands in the darkness. It was quite a magical place and made me feel really inspired on all accounts, not just the theatre one.

It was also the middle of winter and we were reharsing in a very cold place. The only source of heat was an iron stove in a corner. So, naturally, every time the group stopped to rest or discuss the show we gathered close to the stove. I found myself enticed by its red fire in that dark room and at some point, looking at those flames a story came to my mind.

I started jotting it down there and then in my notebook and afterwards rewrote it at home on my computer. The story came out quite easily, as if by herself. Rereading it I realized that, even if it was very simple,  the meanings I found in it were quite poignant for my personal experience.  It resembled a fable  of old.

Visually I kept the fairy tale vibe and did my best to synthesize and simplify my signs while still creating expressive and colorful images. I specifically researched children's book illustration to this end and enjoyed doing something a bit different from my usual work.

So here it is, the Magic Fire: a piece of my mind presented for your enjoyment.

The Magic Fire is a full color comic of 20 pages by Claudia Cangini. I knew her illustrations from several roleplaying games. This is the first comic I read by her. It tells a fairy tale of a magic fire that needs no new wood to keep burning, warming [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
