Sagas of the Northmen

Sagas of the Northmen. Edited by Sean Fahey. A beatifully rendered comic book anthology celebrating the bold lives and heroic deeds of the men and women of the Viking Age. Seven stand-alone tales, and three art prints. Stories include:

Satan’s Hordes. (Written by Mark Wheaton, Artwork by Jok) The Northmen raid on Lindisfarne in 793 A.D. is considered by many modern historians as the beginning of “The Viking Age.” To the inhabitants of Lindisfarne, however, the raid was considered to be God’s Wrath.

No King but the Law. (Written by Sean Fahey, Artwork by Borch) In medieval Iceland, the administration of justice was a collective responsibility, one that was performed not by kings or judges, but by entire communities. Branded an outlaw and banished by his village for murder, Erik Magnusson must survive in the wild on his own for three years before being allowed to rejoin his people. The victim’s brother, however, has his own punishment in mind.

Because it is There. (Written by Sean Fahey, Artwork by Marcelo Basile) Thirsty for knowledge. Hungry for adventure. Curious as to what lay beyond their immediate reach. The Vikings braved vast stretches of the unknown to discover unexplored lands and challenge prevailing conceptions of the known world...in many ways, becoming the astronauts of their time.

The Dimming Spirit. (Written by Tom Pinchuk, Artwork by Ezequiel Rosingana) Central to the Viking warrior ethos was a deeply held belief that those who died courageously in battle, sword in hand, would feast and fight eternally with their fallen brothers in Valhalla, the “Hall of the Slain.” In “The Dimming Spirt,” writer Tom Pinchuk offers a provocative post-modern commentary on the Viking warrior ethos in the guise of a clever tale about loss and retribution.

Ascension. (Written by Derek Fridolfs and Ken Jones, Artwork by Michael Kennedy) A great Chieftain has died, leaving a community in disarray as they search for a worthy successor. Are leaders born or are they made? While exploring elements of Norse mythology and the Viking funeral ritual, “Ascension” is at its heart a moving tale about a father, a son and a shared destiny.

Heart of Iron. (Written by Susan Wallis, Artwork by Todor Hristov) Though little is known about Freydis Eriksdottir, she remains one of the most polarizing figures of the Viking Age. Was she an opportunistic explorer in search of riches or truly intent on settling the New World? A cold blooded murderer or a protector of her people? One thing escapes debate though: above all else, she was a survivor.

The Emperor’s Wineskins. (Written by Sean Fahey, Artwork by Marcelo Basile) Comprised primarily of Nordic and Rus Vikings, the Varangian Guard proudly served as the personal bodyguards of the Byzantine emperors for over four centuries. Widely renowned as an elite fighting force, the earliest members of the Varangian Guard were also notorious drunkards. Nevertheless, those that questioned their abilities or loyalty to the throne did so at their own peril.

In the interest of disclosure I should mention that I am one of the kickstarter backers for this comic. I was given a copy as one of the rewards. Normally I would wait on the review until I had received the physical copy, however it will not be printed [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
