Cold Steel Wardens: Roleplaying in the Iron Age of Comics

Winner of a 2015 BAMFsie award for Best Genre Emulation!

It's Always Dark in Smoke City

A group of muggers thrash an innocent workman in a back alley.

Mob drug runners flood the streets with filth, profiting on the backs of the addicted and hopeless.

A rogue metahuman uses fantastic pyrokinetic powers to torch an entire neighborhood.

The police are overwhelmed.  Prisons overflow with the violent and psychotic.  The innocent suffer while the guilty profit.

Some say that justice is all but gone.  You know better.  Justice hasn't disappeared.  Justice now wears a mask.  Your mask.

Never Despair!  Never Surrender!

Inspired by the rise of dystopian, darker, contemporary comics from the 1980s onwards, Cold Steel Wardens: Roleplaying in the Iron Age of Comics brings the drama and suspense of the world's greatest comics to your game table.  High-stakes action runs hand-in-hand with the new MAFIANAP game mechanics, which emphasize the brutal combat, the intense investigations, and the deep moral quandary found in the Iron Age of Comics.  Players become vigilantes in the crime-ridden city of New Corinth, using their unique skills and powerful metahuman abilities to bring justice to darkened streets.

Strap on your domino mask, buckle your utility belt, and grab your grabbling hook!  You are the night!

Cold Steel Wardens: Roleplaying in the Iron Age of Comics is a complete game.  All you need to play is this book and some ten-sided dice.

I’m also wondering if this is theater of the mind or requires miniatures.

it does, but it's also missing a bit. One the big things about the Iron Age was the love of The Ninja. There is very little information on anything Yakuza based. Also, I recommend ignoring anything that deals with 'Player Death' as an important point. That tends to kill any impact a character's actions will have. The Punisher. for example, is still here.

I just bought the pdf :). I like my pcs/campaigns morally ambiguous or even evil. Do you have any advice on running that kind of campaign/sandbox in CSW?
Thanks a bunch for making an Iron Age supes rpg. I was heavily modding Survive This Vigilante City to give this precise feel.

Bought this for a bit of change of pace from 5e. The group I DM for had an absolute blast with it. Once you've got a handle on the ins and outs, the system is clean and well balanced. I really enjoyed the pace of the combat, very explosive and dynamic.

Fully realizing that it's behind the times, but hard copies are available through Studio 2 Publishing.
And Rogues Gallery is about to hit layout; we'll be selling that through Studio 2 as well. PDFs will be available here, of course.

Apparently there was an issue with the previous publisher. But you can now get hardcopies at Studio 2 Publishing. http://studio2publishing.com/products/cold-steel-wardens-roleplaying-in-the-iron-age-of-comics

I believe the deal with the new publisher will, understandably, not allow for a POD option on DriveThru.

Currently backing the Kickstarter for the first Cold Steel Wardens supplement...Rogues Gallery. Sounds like a great product!

Is there a location where we can discuss this game? I have a few 'issues' (More like clarifications and the like) with some of the stuff, but that could be easily cleared up with a constructive conversation.

Is there anything, mechanically speaking, that is unique about this game - specifically, anything unique that promotes the development of an iron-age comic book-style story? The preview didn't contain anything that distinguishes this game from any other superhero RPG.

Hi, Robert--
CSW contains several elements specific to emphasizing the Iron Age genre. Most notably, these include a high lethality (something most supers games shy away from) and an emphasis on mental health (heroes have a Mental Strain Threshold, which is just as important as physical health). Also, each Hero has a series of Memories, Motivations, and Stances, which contribute to a group "Vigilance Pool". Heroes gain extra dice into the Vigilance Pool when these are directly challenged: when a hero who's sworn not to use guns or fight cops is confronted with a situation that would challenge that moral stance, they get dice in the pool. The amount of dice varies, but is doubled if the player themselves caused the difficulty.
I hope that answers your questions--let me know if you have any more!

Print copies should be available soon through Chronicle City. A handful of proof copies just came back right before GenCon, which were given to people who've worked on CSW. Ideally, a full run will be very soon!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
